Diggers’ Memorial, Jacobsdal

The Diggers Memorial, a fountain and statue in the form of a diamond sieve held aloft by 5 life-size diggers, was erected in honour of diggers past and present. It is located in the Ernest Oppenheimer Gardens, which are in turn a memorial to the late Sir Ernest Oppenheimer, a mining magnate and the first mayor of Kimberley

  • Christoffel Jacobs gave his name to the town laid out on his farm Kalkfontein in 1858.
  • The first residential stands were sold in 1859.
  • Municipal status was given in July 1860.
  • The Riet River irrigation settlements started about 3 km west of the town and extend 15 km up to the confluence of the Riet and Modder rivers at Ritchie.
  • The town is 154km west of Bloemfontein on the R705 and only 50km from Kimberley.
