Fraserburg History

In 1851 it was decided to start a new Dutch Reformed Parish for the growing number of stock farmers in the area. The site of this new parish was the farm Rietfontein. In the same year the new village was surveyed and named Fraserburg in honor of Reverend Colin Fraser, the father of the wife of the Free State’s President, MT Steyn. Of particular note in this town is the Peperbus - a six sided building with one door and one window built in 1861. It was designed as an office by the Reverend Bamberger and has been used as such by the Municipality Market Master, the Magistrate and the Church. Also of interest in Fraserburg are the many well-preserved Victorian-style houses with their elaborate wrought iron ornamentation, which may be found up the side streets.
